The day kicked off with our parents’ run and they were cheered on their way by a guard of honour of Belgrove boys. The mums and dads set the bar high both in terms of ability and enthusiasm, with not even the buggies slowing them down!
Next, we were honoured to host Pat Hooper and Mick Clohissey – two former Belgrove boys and current local legends! Both marathon runners, Pat represented Ireland at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and Mick travels to Rio this summer to do the same. Our athletes met each year group of boys to chat to them about running and the boys were wowed by Pat’s Olympic participation medal and Mick’s rigorous running regime. They then took the boys for a run on the Astro to practice the tips they picked up. A massive “thank you” to the two Raheny Shamrocks athletes for visiting us and we’ll be following Mick’s progress with bated breath in August.
Finally, the staff of Belgrove never like to be left out so after home time, they took off on their own run along the seafront to celebrate and conclude Global Running Day. Well done to all parents, staff, visitors and most importantly, Belgrove boys, who took part.
