Active School Week kicked off on Monday and Tuesday 20th and 21st June with Capoeira workshops for all classes as well as novelty races in the yard. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, rhythm, acrobatics and music. Teachers Sansao, Ciro and Daniela demonstrated the art of capoeira to the boys and gave them the opportunity to try it out for themselves. They also introduced them to the traditional Brazilian musical instruments used in capoeira. Some parents and staff members took part in a class at 1.30 on Monday and feedback was very positive, despite a few sore muscles the following day!
All classes took to the astro on Wednesday for our fun sports day. The boys rotated around a number of stations including penalty shoot-outs, parachute games, obstacle courses, bat-and-ball games, javelin throwing and of course the traditional potato-and-spoon and sack races. Thankfully the sun shone and the boys went back to class hungry, thirsty and exhausted!
On Thursday we welcomed Andrew and Úna from Clontarf Cricket Club who gave ‘taster’ sessions to Junior Infant, Senior Infant and 1st classes. The boys took turns batting and fielding and much fun was had by all.
The three 2nd class teachers organised a soccer tournament for their boys in St. Anne’s Park where the competition was keen and for entertainment value, every bit as good as Euro 16!
