The day started with Aine Duffy, our Active School Week co-ordinator designing a challenging yet manageable obstacle course in the yard. We also moved the slides and a tunnel to the yard as well as blue gym mats for safety. One class at a time, boys from infant classes had to undertake a series of tasks involving balance, agility, co-ordination and speed as they progressed through the obstacle course. There was a treasure hunt element to it …….and each participant received a treasure trove at the end!
Meanwhile, our two Capoeira dance masters Kleber and Sansuo introduced the boys from infant classes to the nuances of this dance style, a combination of modern dance and martial arts….. but, that said very gentle and serene!! The masters used percussion instruments to stir the passions of the boys and get a sense of rhythm into their steps. Active Archie was also present – does ANYTHING happen here without his involvement?
Meanwhile, the boys from 2nd classes went to St. Anne’s Park for the Copa del Belgrove where they enjoyed a sun-drenched soccer tournament. Rumours that Roy Keane and trigger were seen scouting for talent cannot be confirmed at this time!
Day 1 of ASW closed with a Capoeira session for the moms and dads. We had about 12 parents for a session with Kleber and Sansuo where they were put through more intense stretches – especially in the hamstrings and what the masters called ‘the gluteal area’. Again Active Archie seemed determined to steal the scene from the parents! There seemed to be general agreement among the dancers that all would know by tomorrow morning where exactly one finds the gluteal area! Roll on day 2….
